all right so let’s seriously consider what’s happening in this scene for a minute

from katara’s perspective, and without the advantage of knowing that zuko isn’t a heartless monster

the fire nation has come back to katara’s village

the last time she interacted with them, the head soldier went to katara’s house and killed her mother

and this time, one of the fire nation dudes reaches out and grabs one of the last living relatives katara has

this is terrifying

i can’t imagine being in katara’s position at this moment

this is such an intense scene, like, god

Her mother died protecting her.

And I think that her Gran-Gran taught her the things she needed to know in place of her mother. It’s also probably why she cherishes her grandmother’s necklace so much. Her Grandmother was her female role model when her mom wasn’t able to be there to teach her things.

Think about it.

She remembers losing her mother because her mother protected her

She might have thought that she’d lost her father because her father had left the village to fight against the fire nation (and I don’t think there was a postal service like they have today)

and then she was going to lose her grandmother.
